The SNU EU Centre is the first research centre to be awarded by the European Commission as the Center of Excellence in South Korea since 2011. The centre strives to develop a national and East Asian hub for EU studies. It will coordinate the education, research and networking activities on EU affairs, and mobilize all human and financial resources through its diverse partnerships, and thereby maximize a synergy effect.

The centre is intended to serve as a driving force for the following: to develop an EU-related curriculum, to enhance further research projects focusing on the EU, to increase the Korean public’s awareness of the EU, especially on its policy and institutions, and to promote various networking activities through its rich connection to media and newspaper institutions, academia, publications, conferences and seminars.

Since 2008, KIEP has been running the GPAS (Graduate Program for Area Studies) scholarship based on its extensive networking and fruitful regional research experiences. This project contributes to the revitalization of local research, training of local experts, and spreading of expertise through various programs such as regular lectures of domestic and foreign specialists, field surveys, overseas internships, and special lectures by world scholars. As it celebrates its 11th anniversary in 2019, GPAS has produced over 5600 talented graduates who have made use of their regional expertise and degree into areas such as international organizations, government-funded research institutes, and private companies.
